An Instagram live talk with Sujata Assomull hosted by Prinseps

Prinseps is set to host an Instagram Live session with Sujata Assomull titled The Bhanu Athaiya Legacy Through a Connoisseur's Eye. The talk will explore the legendary costume designer’s legacy, her ancestral lineage, and contribution to Bollywood. Hosted on Instagram Live, the talk will be shown on Thursday 12th August at 7:00PM.

The talk will precede two upcoming auctions of Bhanu Athaiya’s estate hosted by Prinseps. The sales includes costumes from two of her critically acclaimed films, Gandhi (Oscar winner, 1983) and Lagaan (National Film Award winner, 2003), as well as a groundbreaking offering of NFTs based on Athaiya’s fashion sketches.

The Instagram Live session is part of a larger series of talks Prinseps have hosted on Bhanu Athaiya’s legacy. Past talks have included an Instagram live with HH Maharani Radhika Raje of Baroda discussing Athaiya’s heirloom textile collection, and a panel discussion exploring the personal and creative life of Athaiya which hosted Radhika Gupta, Athaiya’s daughter, amongst others.

For the upcoming talk, Prinseps will invite Sujata Assomull to discuss Bhanu Athaiya’s legacy and contribution to costume design and Bollywood. Born and raised in London, Sujata Assomull was the founding editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar India and has been the communications director of Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Jimmy Choo in India. Having recently written her first book, 100 Iconic Bollywood Costumes outlining a key visual history of Indian cinematic fashion, Sujata Assomull will offer a fascinating insight into Bhanu Athaiya’s life and work.
